The R-1 rocket, known to NATO as the SS-1 Scunner, was the first tactical ballistic missile manufactured in the Soviet Union, closely based on the German V-2 rocket. It entered service with the Soviet Army on 28 November 1950 and, while never an effective strategic weapon on its own, gave Soviet engineers experience that enabled the USSR to build far more capable rockets afterward.
