Prithvi, meaning Earth, is a family of tactical surface-to-surface short-range ballistic missiles developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Program, which the Government of India launched in 1983. It was the first missile developed under that program and is deployed by India's Strategic Forces Command. The program planned three variants: Prithvi I for the Army with a 150 km range and a 1,000 kg payload, Prithvi II for the Air Force with a 350 km range and a 500 kg payload, and Prithvi III for the Navy with a 350 km range and a 1,000 kg payload. Prithvi I is a single-stage liquid-fuelled missile that entered Indian Army service in 1994 and is being replaced by the more accurate Prahaar missile. Prithvi II was inducted into the Strategic Forces Command in 2003 and is still fired in annual user trials. Prithvi III is a two-stage missile whose naval version is called Dhanush. The missiles can carry conventional warheads or nuclear ones.
