The Shaheen-II, also designated Hatf-VI, is a land-based medium-range ballistic missile of Pakistan. It was designed and developed by the National Engineering and Scientific Commission and is shown on a large multi-wheeled MAZ vehicle. The missile is a two-stage design built to deliver a nuclear or high-explosive warhead over about 2,500 kilometres, and it is operated by Pakistan's army strategic command. Its re-entry vehicle carries fins and small thrust motors for terminal manoeuvring and accuracy. Pakistani planners wanted a surface-based second-strike capability against India, and the programme was in development from about 2000 until the missile was finally deployed in 2014. American estimates put fewer than 50 operationally deployed as of 2017. Claims of outside help in its design have been rejected by Pakistan, which describes it as an indigenous programme.
