BrahMos Missile

Missiles And Guided Munitions

The BrahMos is a supersonic cruise missile developed jointly by India and Russia through a bilateral venture, its name combining the Brahmaputra and Moskva rivers of the two partner nations, and based on the design of the Russian P-800 Oniks anti-ship missile adapted into a jointly produced weapon that entered service in the mid-2000s. Capable of flying at supersonic speed for most of its flight profile, a characteristic that shortens the time a target has to detect and intercept it compared with slower subsonic cruise missiles, the BrahMos has been developed in versions launchable from surface ships, submarines, aircraft and land-based mobile launchers, giving it a wide range of platforms and roles against both naval and land targets. It is frequently described by Indian and Russian officials as among the fastest anti-ship and land-attack cruise missiles in operational service anywhere in the world.
