Missiles And Guided Munitions

The Buran, also designated M-40 or RSS-40, was a Soviet intercontinental cruise missile developed by the Myasishchev design bureau, authorized in May 1954 with development beginning the year before. It was intended to carry a 3,500 kilogram hydrogen bomb across roughly 8,500 kilometers using a ramjet-powered second stage capable of Mach 3.1 to 3.2 at 18 to 20 kilometers altitude, its two-stage system of a booster (M-41) and a cruise stage (M-42) cancelled in November 1957 before any flight tests, once Soviet planners concluded the R-7 Semyorka intercontinental ballistic missile made the cruise-missile approach obsolete.
