Fat Man, also known as Mark III, was a nuclear fission gravity bomb developed by the United States and detonated over the Japanese city of Nagasaki on 9 August 1945, the second and larger of the only two nuclear weapons ever used in warfare. Its design had already been proven weeks earlier at the Trinity test in New Mexico on 16 July 1945, and the same design was used in seven of the first eight nuclear detonations in history.
