RDS-3 was the third atomic bomb developed by the Soviet Union, tested in 1951 following the earlier RDS-1 and RDS-2 designs. Known in military use by the codename Marya, it used a composite design with a plutonium core inside a uranium shell, giving it an explosive yield of about 41.2 kilotons. A modernized version, the RDS-3T, became the first mass produced Soviet nuclear weapon and was assigned to Long Range Aviation in 1953.
