The 9K35 Strela-10, known to NATO as the SA-13 Gopher, is a Soviet short-range surface-to-air missile system mounted on a tracked MT-LB chassis. It is aimed visually and its missiles home on infrared or optical contrast, so it is meant mainly for low-altitude threats such as helicopters. Development of the Strela-10SV began on 24 July 1969, partly as an economical complement to the all-weather Tunguska program. Trials at the Donguzkom range in 1973 and 1974 were disappointing for missile kill probability and vehicle reliability, so acceptance into service was delayed until 16 May 1976. It replaced the wheeled BRDM-2 carrier of the earlier 9K31 Strela-1 with a more mobile tracked vehicle that carries four ready missiles and eight reloads. Later variants and the improved 9M333 missile kept it in use, and it has been used in the Angolan Civil War, the Gulf War, the Kosovo War, the Syrian Civil War and the Russo-Ukrainian War.
