The A-135, known to NATO as ABM-4 Gorgon, is a Russian anti-ballistic missile system deployed around Moscow to intercept incoming warheads aimed at the city and its surrounding region. Designed by the Soviet Union's NPO Novator design bureau beginning in 1978, it succeeded the earlier A-35 system and attained operational status on February 17, 1995, complying with the terms of the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty. The system operates roughly 68 active launchers, with interceptor missiles capable of Mach 7 speeds and an operational range between 350 and 900 kilometers.
