S-300 Missile System

Missiles And Guided Munitions

The S-300 is a family of Soviet, and later Russian, long-range surface-to-air missile systems developed beginning in the 1970s and entering Soviet service around 1978, designed to provide wide-area air defense against aircraft, cruise missiles and, in later variants, some ballistic missile threats, and it became one of the most widely exported and most capable long-range air defense systems fielded by the Soviet Union and Russia. Built around a mobile, road-transportable radar and missile launcher system rather than a fixed installation, the S-300 family evolved through multiple generations of increasingly capable missiles and radars over several decades, culminating in later derivatives with substantially extended range and improved resistance to jamming and stealth aircraft. Exported to numerous countries and integrated into the air defense networks of nations including Russia's own territory, the system has drawn extensive Western military and intelligence attention as a benchmark for evaluating how well modern aircraft and missiles can penetrate contemporary layered air defenses, and later S-400 and planned S-500 systems represent direct further evolution of the same basic design lineage.
