Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, known as THAAD, is an American anti-ballistic missile system deployed since 2008 to intercept and destroy short, medium and intermediate range ballistic missiles during their terminal phase. Rather than carrying a warhead, the THAAD interceptor destroys its target using the kinetic energy of a direct impact, and the system was developed after Iraqi Scud missile attacks during the 1991 Gulf War.
