The 36-pounder long gun was the largest piece of artillery mounted on French warships during the Age of Sail, and was also used for coastal defense and fortification. It exceeded the heaviest guns fielded by the French Army, which were 24-pounder long guns, with a nominal shot weight of 36 French livres, or about 17.6 kilograms.
