Cruisers and Destroyers

Medium-sized surface warships, cruisers that protect fleets and trade routes and destroyers that screen them against submarines and aircraft. A weapon belongs here when its cited article describes it as a cruiser, armored ship or destroyer, or a class of them. It excludes battleships, carriers and submarines. Cruisers were built for range and firepower and destroyers for speed and escort work, and the two types fought together in fleet actions, convoy battles and shore bombardment from the Second World War onward.
