The Ordnance QF Hotchkiss 6-pounder gun is a light 57mm quick-firing naval gun designed by the French manufacturer Hotchkiss et Cie in 1883 and brought into service in 1885, built to counter the newly emerging threat of small, fast torpedo boats. The British produced it under license through the Elswick Ordnance Company from 1884 onward, and it was later adapted as a coastal defense gun and a tank gun as well as a naval weapon. Barrel lengths ranged from 40 to 58 calibers, with the 40-caliber version most common, firing fixed quick-fire ammunition at about 25 rounds per minute with a muzzle velocity of 554 meters per second.
