Remington Model 788

The Remington 788 is a bolt-action, centerfire rifle made by Remington Arms of the United States from 1967 to 1983, designed by Wayne Leek. It was marketed as an inexpensive but accurate hunting rifle intended to compete with other manufacturers' budget rifles, sold alongside Remington's costlier Model 700 line. It used a single-column detachable magazine holding three rounds for larger calibres and four rounds for .222 Remington and .223 Remington. A rimfire derivative, sold as the 580, 581 or 582 depending on its feed method, was also produced, and a target version of that .22-caliber series, the 540X, was used by the United States military as a training rifle.
