The SIG Sauer P226 is a semi-automatic service pistol developed jointly by the Swiss company SIG and the German company Sauer & Sohn, introduced in the early 1980s as an enlarged, non-compact version of the earlier P220 pistol, submitted to and a finalist in the United States military's XM9 pistol trials of the 1980s that the Beretta 92 ultimately won on price, after which the P226 went on to substantial adoption by other military, federal and police agencies instead. The United States Navy adopted the P226 for its SEAL special operations teams, valuing its reliability, and numerous other national militaries, federal law enforcement agencies including the United States Secret Service, and police forces around the world subsequently adopted the pistol or its variants as a standard sidearm. Its double-action/single-action trigger system, all-steel or alloy frame construction, and reputation for reliability across decades of military and police service have made it one of the most widely trusted service pistol designs of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries.
