The BM59 is an automatic battle rifle developed in Italy in 1959 by designer Domenico Salza. Based on the American M1 Garand, it was rechambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge and modified to accept a detachable magazine and fire in selective fire mode. It was manufactured by Beretta as well as under license at the Bandung Weapons Factory in Indonesia and the Defence Industries Corporation in Nigeria, and has remained in service with some forces since its introduction.
