The Standschütze Hellriegel M1915 is a water-cooled submachine gun designed in 1915 by a member of the Austro-Hungarian Standschützen militia named Hellriegel, during the First World War. It is regarded as an early candidate for the first submachine gun built with a buttstock intended for shoulder firing, feeding from drum or stick magazines at a conjectured rate of 650 to 850 rounds per minute. Its complex construction and high cost, combined with Austria-Hungary's strained wartime resources, meant it never advanced past a prototype, and only photographs from October 1915 survive today.
