The Howa Type 89, known informally as the Hachikyu, is a Japanese assault rifle developed by the Defense Agency's Technical Research and Development Institute and manufactured by Howa. Chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge, it entered service in 1989 with the Japan Self-Defense Forces, replacing the earlier Howa Type 64, and is also used by the Japan Coast Guard and the Special Assault Team. Because of Japan's strict arms export ban, the rifle has never been exported outside the country.
