The Pleter is a Croatian submachine gun developed in 1991, during the breakup of Yugoslavia, when Croatia faced an international arms embargo while building its own military at the start of the Croatian War of Independence. Manufactured locally by the Oroplet factory in Pleternica and drawing on earlier designs such as the Sten and MP40, about 4,500 were built; the open-bolt, full-automatic 9x19mm weapon had simplified construction, fixed sights, and no safety mechanism, and could be fitted with a silencer, proving effective as an insurgency weapon during the Yugoslav Wars.
