The Walther P5 is a West German semi-automatic service pistol built by Carl Walther GmbH Sportwaffen in Ulm and introduced in 1977 in response to German police agencies seeking a modern replacement for their 7.65mm pistols. Chambered mainly in 9x19mm Parabellum, with 7.65x21mm and 9x21mm variants for other markets, it evolved from the Walther P38's locking mechanism while adding a pivoting firing pin and other modern safety features. About 110,000 were manufactured between 1977 and 1998 in standard and compact versions weighing around 0.75 to 0.8 kilograms.
