The Austrian Army was one of the most formidable forces Napoleonic France had to face. After Prussia made peace with France in 1795, Austria carried the main burden of resistance for nearly a decade, and its unwillingness to join the Third Coalition was overcome by British subsidies before its decisive defeat at the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805 forced the humiliating Treaty of Pressburg.
