The Smith and Wesson Model 29 is a six-shot, double-action revolver chambered for the .44 Magnum cartridge, with production beginning in 1955 and the Model 29 name formally applied in 1957. At its introduction it was the most powerful production handgun available. It became world famous after appearing as the sidearm of the fictional detective Dirty Harry Callahan in the 1971 film Dirty Harry, after which retailers struggled to keep it in stock.
