Colt Officer's ACP

Small Arms And Sidearms

The Colt Officer's ACP, also called the Colt Officer's Model, is a single-action, semi-automatic, magazine-fed and recoil-operated handgun based on John Browning's M1911 design. Colt introduced it in 1985 as a response to the many aftermarket companies that were selling smaller versions of the M1911. It followed earlier compact 1911 efforts, among them the General Officer's Model Pistol that Rock Island Arsenal developed in 1975 for generals of the US Army and Air Force, and the compact Combat Master that Pat Yates of Detonics introduced the following year. The pistol is chambered in .45 ACP and differs from a full-size M1911 mainly in its 3.5 inch barrel and its 6-round magazine; a lightweight aluminium-frame variant weighs 24 ounces. Reviewers praised its small size but criticised it as finicky with ammunition and sharp in recoil. The source names no military operator, so the entry covers a commercial compact sidearm in the 1911 family.
