The Ruger LCP, short for Lightweight Compact Pistol, is a subcompact pocket pistol chambered in .380 ACP and made by Sturm, Ruger & Co. It was introduced at the 2008 SHOT Show as Ruger's first entry in the field of tiny, ultra-light defensive pistols, designed in response to customer requests for a compact back-up gun for police and a concealed-carry handgun for civilians. It is 5.16 inches long and weighs 9.4 ounces, with a glass-filled nylon frame, a two-finger grip and a through-hardened blued steel slide. Its locked-breech mechanism and takedown resemble the Kel-Tec P-3AT, with a Glock-style extractor and an external slide stop added. Ruger recalled early guns in October 2008 over a possible discharge when dropped, and later models include the second-generation LCP of 2013, the LCP Custom of 2015, the LCP II of 2016 and the double-stack LCP Max of 2021.
