The L129A1 is a 7.62x51mm NATO designated marksman rifle manufactured by the United States firm Lewis Machine & Tool Company for the British Armed Forces, adopted in 2009 and entering operational service in April 2010 during the war in Afghanistan. It was developed to close a gap in which British infantry faced engagements beyond the effective range of standard 5.56mm assault rifles and light machine guns, using a gas impingement, rotating bolt action to fire the full-power 7.62mm NATO cartridge out to roughly 800 meters. The semi-automatic rifle has a user-removable barrel unit and is typically fitted with a Trijicon ACOG TA648-308 6x48 optical sight, and more than 3,000 have been supplied to British forces since adoption.
