The ASMI, short for Asmita, is an Indian submachine gun designed in 2020 by Lt. Colonel Prasad Bansod at the Armament Research and Development Establishment as a domestically produced successor to India's 1960s-era 1A Carbine. It fires 9x19mm Parabellum ammunition using straight blowback operation, entered production in August 2024 through manufacturer Lokesh Machines Limited, and was developed to offer Indian forces a domestic alternative to imported submachine guns at roughly one-third the cost of comparable foreign models.
