The Ruger AR-556 is a semi-automatic, direct-impingement rifle on the AR-15 platform, manufactured by the American firearms company Sturm, Ruger & Co. and introduced in 2014 as an entry-level AR-15. It uses a gas-operated, rotating bolt mechanism and is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO or .223 Remington, with a 16.1 inch chrome-moly steel barrel, a fixed front sight paired with a flip-up rear sight, and STANAG-compatible 30-round magazines. Ruger later added variants including the AR-556 MPR multi-purpose rifle in 2017 and an AR-556 pistol in 2019, before production ended in 2025 with the announced Ruger Harrier as its replacement.
