Liberator (gun)

The Liberator is a single-shot handgun designed to be produced entirely with a 3D printer, created by the American open-source hardware group Defense Distributed and released online on May 6, 2013, after being designed that April. Chambered in .380 ACP with a 64 millimeter barrel and an overall length of 216 millimeters, it was the first such printable firearm design made widely available online, and its blueprints were downloaded more than 100,000 times in the two days before the United States Department of State demanded that Defense Distributed retract the plans. The design nevertheless spread to file-sharing platforms such as The Pirate Bay and GitHub, where it remains accessible, and it takes its name from the FP-45 Liberator, a single-shot handgun produced by General Motors for the Office of Strategic Services during the Second World War.
