The Norinco CQ, officially known as the CQ 5.56, is an unlicensed Chinese variant of the M16 rifle manufactured by Sichuan Changqing Machine Works, a subsidiary of Norinco, with production beginning in 1983. It is a gas-operated, rotating-bolt assault rifle chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO with a three-position safe, semi-automatic, and full-automatic selector. Its barrel uses a 1:12 rifling twist optimized for the lighter M193 Ball cartridge rather than the heavier NATO standard SS109/M855 round, and the rifle weighs 2.9 kilograms empty with an overall length of 1000 millimeters and a 508 millimeter barrel.
