The Kunitomo air gun is an air rifle developed around 1820 by the Japanese inventor Kunitomo Ikkansai, who built it by applying Western technical knowledge, or rangaku, obtained through Dutch contacts at the isolated trading post of Dejima. Ikkansai, already known for other gun-manufacturing methods, is credited in the history of Japanese technology for this 1819 to 1820 invention, though little is recorded about the weapon's practical or battlefield use beyond its significance as a technological milestone.
