The MAS-38 is a French submachine gun designed in the 1930s and used by French and later occupying German forces during the Second World War. It grew out of a French small arms development program begun between 1918 and 1922, though budget priorities tied to construction of the Maginot Line delayed adoption of new infantry weapons apart from the LMG 1924 machine gun. Manufactured by the Manufacture d'Armes de Saint-Etienne, about 1,958 units were built before May 1940, with thousands more produced under German occupation and after the war.
