Eritrean War of Independence

The Eritrean War of Independence was an armed insurgency fought from 1 September 1961 to 29 May 1991 by Eritrean nationalists seeking self-determination and independence from Ethiopian rule. Eritrea, an Italian colony from the 1880s until its defeat by the Allies in 1941, was placed under British military administration and then federated with Ethiopia by the United Nations; as the federations autonomy was steadily curtailed through the 1950s, the Eritrean Liberation Front launched an armed struggle in September 1961, and Ethiopia formally annexed Eritrea the following year. The Eritrean Peoples Liberation Front emerged as the dominant liberation movement from 1977 and, after decades of guerrilla warfare against first the Ethiopian Empire and then the Marxist-Leninist Derg regime, decisively defeated Ethiopian forces in May 1991. Eritreans then voted almost unanimously for independence in an internationally supervised referendum in 1993, ending the war in an Eritrean Peoples Liberation Front victory and Eritrean independence.
