Mozambican War of Independence

The Mozambican War of Independence was a guerrilla conflict between the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) and Portugal, fought from 25 September 1964 until a ceasefire on 8 September 1974. It grew out of unrest among indigenous Mozambicans against Portuguese colonial rule, part of a wider series of wars Portugal fought against independence movements across its African territories beginning in Angola in 1961. Although the Portuguese army generally held the military advantage over FRELIMO's guerrilla forces, the war ended after the 1974 Carnation Revolution overthrew Portugal's Salazarist regime, and Mozambique achieved independence on 25 June 1975, ending 470 years of Portuguese colonial rule in the region.
