Livonian War

The Livonian War was fought from 1558 to 1583 for control of Old Livonia, the region roughly corresponding to modern Estonia and Latvia, pitting the Tsardom of Russia under Ivan the Terrible against a shifting coalition that came to include the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, later the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Kingdom of Sweden, and Denmark-Norway. Ivan's invasion in 1558 shattered the weak Livonian Confederation, but the resulting vacuum drew in Russia's neighbors, transforming a regional land grab into a prolonged multi-power struggle across the eastern Baltic. Poland-Lithuania's union under the 1569 Union of Lublin and the military reforms of King Stephen Bathory turned the tide against Russia in the war's final years, and the 1582 Truce of Jam Zapolski and 1583 Treaty of Plussa forced Russia to relinquish its Livonian conquests. The long, costly war left Russia territorially diminished in the Baltic and economically exhausted, contributing to the internal crisis that led into Russia's early seventeenth-century Time of Troubles.
