Igala-Benin War

The Igala-Benin War was fought from 1515 to 1516 in what is now Nigeria between the Igala Kingdom and the Kingdom of Benin, allied with the Portuguese Empire. The war broke out after the Oba of Benin's conversion to Christianity, undertaken to facilitate trade with Portugal, prompted dissident Benin nobles to defect and support the Ata of Igala instead. Benin and its Portuguese allies won the war, a victory attributed to the assassination of the Igala general by a servant of Queen Idia and to the firepower and military assistance the Portuguese provided under Oba Esigie.
