Despenser War

Medieval

The Despenser War was a baronial revolt against King Edward II of England fought in 1321 and 1322, led by the Marcher Lords Roger Mortimer and Humphrey de Bohun, and driven by opposition to Hugh Despenser the Younger, Edward's royal favorite. The rebels campaigned through the summer of 1321, but Edward rallied support and won a decisive victory at the Battle of Boroughbridge in March 1322 over the Contrariant lords, including Mortimer, Bohun and Thomas of Lancaster. The war ended in a decisive royal victory that returned the Despensers to power, saw rebel leaders executed and the Ordinances of 1311 revoked, and strengthened Edward's rule until his fall from power in 1326.
