Regreg War

The Regreg War, sometimes called by the folk name Paregreg, was a civil war fought from 1404 to 1406 within the Javanese empire of Majapahit, pitting the western royal court under Wikramawardhana against the breakaway eastern court of Blambangan under Bhre Wirabhumi. The conflict grew out of a succession dispute over the prestigious Bhre Lasem title between rival branches of the Majapahit royal family, a rivalry that escalated when Wirabhumi sought and received diplomatic recognition of his eastern court's independence from Ming dynasty China in 1403. After two years of fighting with victories on both sides, the western court's forces finally defeated the eastern army in 1406, and Bhre Wirabhumi was killed while attempting to flee by boat, allowing Wikramawardhana to reunite the empire under his own rule. The war weakened Majapahit's control over its overseas dependencies and, after some 170 Ming diplomatic envoys were killed amid the fighting, forced the Majapahit court to pay a heavy indemnity to China, marking the beginning of the empire's long political decline.
