Adubi War

Modern

The Adubi War, also known locally as Ogun Adubi or the Egba Uprising, was fought in June and July 1918 in the British Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria, provoked by the imposition of direct colonial taxation on top of existing forced-labor obligations. After British authorities arrested seventy Egba chiefs and demanded they disarm and pay taxes, roughly 30,000 Egba rebels rose up, derailing trains, destroying a railway station, and killing a British agent. British forces suppressed the uprising by July 10, at a cost of about 600 deaths, and the defeat led to the abolition of Abeokuta's independence, though the colonial government postponed direct taxation itself until 1925.
