The Kongo-Wara rebellion, also known as the War of the Hoe Handle or the Baya War, was an anticolonial uprising fought from 1928 to 1931 across French Equatorial Africa and French Cameroon, with most of the fighting in what is now the Central African Republic. It arose from native populations' resistance to forced recruitment for railway construction and rubber tapping, and drew in the Gbaya people along with allied Mbum, Mbai, Pana, Yangere, Mbimou, and Goundi groups, while French colonial forces were aided by the Fula people and some Gbaya chiefdoms. Despite its scale, the rebellion remains relatively obscure compared to other interwar conflicts, and it ended in the rebels' defeat.
