Akure-Benin War

The Akure-Benin War of 1818 was fought between the Kingdom of Benin and the Akure kingdom in what is now southwestern Nigeria. Hostilities began after the Deji of Akure, Arakale, killed a Benin emissary, Chief Osague, prompting Benin's Oba Osemwende to send a military expedition under Chief Erebo the Ezomo, General Ologbosere, and the Imaran. Benin forces defeated the Akure army, destroyed the Deji's palace, and captured the kingdom, which lost its autonomy and was required to pay tribute and acknowledge the Oba of Benin's authority as a vassal state.
