The acinaces is a double edged dagger or short sword, roughly 40 to 60 centimeters long, that originated among the Scythians and became especially associated with the Persians, who spread its use to the Medes, Caspians and eventually the Greeks during the first millennium BCE. Archaeological examples range from the eighth or seventh century BC Arzhan burial mounds in Tuva to first century AD finds at Tillya Tepe, with hilts featuring lobed or bollock dagger guards and split or antenna style pommels. Its scabbard carried a large decorative mount for suspension from the wearer's right side, and Persian kings prized it as a gift symbolizing royal favor.
