The cheiroballistra was a small, two-armed, torsion-powered, metal-framed catapult known from an anonymous Greek treatise titled Heron's Construction and Dimensions of the Cheiroballistra. Its name combines the Greek cheiro, a form of the word for hand, with ballistra, from the Greek verb ballein, meaning to throw. The weapon is known almost entirely from the manuscript, since no archaeological find matches the proportions of a cheiroballistra described in the text.
