The falcata was a single-edged, forward-curved sword used by warriors of pre-Roman Iberia, particularly among the Celtiberian peoples of the Iberian Peninsula, from roughly the fourth century BC and adopted in modified forms by Carthaginian and later Roman forces who encountered it during the Punic Wars. Its distinctive curved blade, widening and gaining weight toward the tip, combined the momentum of an axe-like chopping blow with a cutting edge capable of slicing wounds, and Roman sources including Livy described the falcata's effectiveness as sufficiently alarming that Roman soldiers reportedly feared facing it in close combat. The Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca is recorded as having equipped Iberian mercenary infantry in his own armies with the falcata during his Italian campaign in the Second Punic War. Archaeological examples recovered from Iberian burial sites show frequently ornate hilts, often shaped as horse or bird heads, indicating the falcata's significance as both a weapon and a status object among Iberian warrior elites.
