The golok is a cutting tool similar to a machete, used across the Malay Archipelago for both agricultural work and self-defense. It is documented as far back as 1518 in Sundanese texts and 1612 in Malay sources, and it appears today throughout Indonesia and Malaysia under many regional names, including bedog in Sundanese West Java. Its practical design influenced the machetes issued to the British Army beginning in the early 1950s.
