The partisan is a European polearm with a long, swordlike spearhead flanked by lateral projections called blade catchers, designed to trap and turn aside an opposing weapon in close combat. Infantry used it mainly to counter cavalry charges, and it saw service in Europe during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. The rise of practical firearms and the bayonet made it obsolete on the battlefield, but it survived as a ceremonial weapon and still appears in formal guard details today.
