The petronel was a muzzleloading cavalry firearm of the 16th century, described by Robert Barret in his 1598 work Theorike and Practike of Modern Warres as a horsemans peece, occupying a middle ground in size between a pistol and a carbine. It was fired braced against the chest or slung across the body, used either matchlock or wheellock ignition, and by extension gave its name to the light cavalry troops who carried it.
