The scythe sword, or Sensenschwert, is a single-edged sword of the German Renaissance related to the dussack, made by fitting a sword hilt to the blade of an agricultural scythe. Like the ancient falx and falcata, its cutting edge runs along the inside of the curve rather than the outside, as on a scimitar or saber. The only confirmed surviving example forged from an actual scythe blade belonged to the Reformation-era preacher Thomas Muntzer, who died in 1525, and is now held in the Historical Museum in Dresden; it bears an incised runic calendar, a feature also reported on several other early sixteenth century blades once held in Berlin, Vienna, Paris, Munich, Graz and Luxembourg.
