Szabla is the Polish word for saber, a curved sword that came into widespread use in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the early modern period, especially among the light cavalry of the 17th century. It spread more broadly across Europe after the Thirty Years' War and was also adopted by infantry, while among the Polish nobility, the szlachta, it became a symbol of status and one of the most important pieces of traditional dress.
