The English Civil War, or Great Rebellion, was a series of civil wars and political conflicts fought between Royalists, supporters of King Charles I, and Parliamentarians in the Kingdom of England from 1642 to 1651. Scotland's Covenanter government allied first with Parliament from 1643 to 1647 and then, after Charles's defeat, with the Royalist cause from 1649 to 1652, and the wars ended in a Parliamentarian victory.
